The French ceramist Bernard Palissy created decorative glazed ceramic platters rich with realistic snakes, lizards, moths, snails and shells in the 16th Century. Fragments and examples of these early pieces are only found in museums. However, in the 19th Century the potters of France and Portugal studied Bernard Palissy’s designs and created their own Victorian era palissy. The 19th Century Portuguese palissy pieces offered on the LINDA HORN website are imprinted with the potters marks primarily from the Mafra and Son potteries in Caldas, Portugal and Jose A. Cunha from Caldas da Rainha. Linda’s quality selection of this tin glazed earthenware or palissy has all the green flora and fauna as well as reptiles, frogs, toads and moths in amusing interactive settings. Check the website in the future for additional antique French palissy pieces by noted 19th Century French ceramic artists such as Avisseau and Barbizet, and additional Portuguese palissy pieces
